Visit creative friends and neighbors at Questa Studio Tour – taosnews

Image
By Anna Racicot tempo@taosnews.com For a spell of artistic exploration, the Questa Studio Tour on Saturday and Sunday (Aug. 17-18) offers a surprising variety of both crafts and fine arts, according to coordinator Peggy Trigg. Visitors will see jewelry, paintings and handmade furniture in the artists’ own studios and be able to visit group hubs displaying the work of up to 10 artists each. This year’s tour is the second organized by the Questa Creative Council and the fourth consecutive tour. There will be a central information hub in the center of town on the northeast corner of Questa’s one stoplight, at the intersection of state roads 522 and 38. This is a good place to start, as visitors can pick up a brochure with the studio tour map, artists’ flyers and also water, snacks and directions to local eateries. Several of the hubs offer snacks, drinks and restrooms. This year’s tour includes Lama and features the acrylic and pastel paintings of Monique Belitz in her historic home...

Chemist has one of the most colorful jobs in Seattle – The Seattle Times

Image
Aug. 14, 2019 at 6:00 am Updated Aug. 14, 2019 at 2:19 pm Meet Ron Harmon, who works at Daniel Smith, a Seattle-based manufacturer of watercolors and oils for artists. What do you do? I am the chief chemist for Daniel Smith Inc . I’m responsible for research and development (R&D) of artist paints, as well as overall quality control of all Daniel Smith paints and products. I consistently test new and exciting pigments from all over the world for their adaptability to artist materials. How did you get started in that field?  After receiving my bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Whittier College, I began my first career role as a quality control chemist for a major aerospace coating company. Shortly after, I was promoted to R&D, working on various coatings for the military in the same company. I wanted to work closer with people who could use what I made to create beauty, and six years after my first career role, found myself moving to Seattle to work for Daniel Sm...

“Paper Routes – Women to Watch 2020,” Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art – kcstudio.org

Image
“Paper Routes – Women to Watch 2020,” Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art What the artist describes as “a community of naked, plush creatures called fumblys” populate Fuko Ito’s pastel-colored, psychedelic work, and I, for one, would like to go on record as saying I’m up for this adventure anytime. Ito’s two monumental watercolor and colored pencil on paper drawings illustrate her community of what appear to be industrious, yet relaxed creatures. In the triptych “billowing hearts” from the “heart of plush”   series, the fumblys seem to labor and relax together in a soft-focus atmosphere that is neither of this or any other actual world currently known to us. The figures seem impossibly seductive and yet intentionally playful as they band together in various unknowable tasks. “Love mobility,” also from the “heart of plush” series shows fumblys moving up the side of a candy-colored Tower of Babel highlighted against a night sky. While certainly not sharing the hard edges of a lot ...

Mendel goes from historic album covers to vivid watercolors – catskillmountainnews.com

Image
PROLIFIC — Michael Mendel began painting daily in 2009 and has completed 403 paintings to date. He is currently working on a commission for Delaware and Ulster Railroad in Arkville. Photo by Eddie Donoghue. Not many pick up an art form late in life with such skill, but then few have lived lives as interesting as Michael Mendel. For the last 10 years, Mendel has been painting feverishly, having completed 403 watercolor paintings to date. A resident of both Fleischmanns and the Bronx, Mendel’s art features the people and scenes that make up both of his homes. Working from photographs, his work is often realistic, sharp and vivid and not like that of many other watercolorists. Mendel was born in Berlin, Germany in 1934 and his parents escaped Hitler’s Nazi Regime in 1938. It wasn’t a smooth trip to the U.S., however, as his family was forced to live in Cuba for two years before they could legally enter the U.S. It was in college when he a friend invited him to the art department ...

Joyner’s watercolor class was one of 20 outdoor art workshops scheduled this summer at the Charlotte business for the inaugural season of “Art in the Garden.” “For years, people who were artists or took art classes have said, ‘I’d love it if we could paint here,’ or, ‘Do you mind if I photograph here?’ So we decided it would be good to let the artists know that they could come and use our grounds,” said Eileen Schilling , who owns Horsford with her husband, Charlie Proutt . “We put it out there, and we got a great response.” The a...

Cincinnati-Based Visionaries + Voices Artist Curtis Davis Got a Shout-Out From ‘The New Yorker’ – Cincinnati CityBeat

Image
Visionaries Voices artist Curtis Davis currently has a show at New York City’s White Columns gallery Aug 14, 2019 11 AM Curtis Davis with a few of his sculptures. Courtesy Visionaries and Vocies Cincinnati-based artist Curtis Davis received a shout-out in this week’s issue of The New Yorker for his current solo exhibition in NYC’s White Columns gallery, which was made possible thanks to a crowdfunding campaign conducted by local nonprofit Visionaries Voices.  That GoFundMe campaign raised over $3,500, making it possible for V V — a nonprofit organization that provides resources to more than 125 artists with disabilities — to send Davis’s works to White Columns, cover his and his independent provider’s travel expenses and allow for a V V staff member to go with them.  The show — which runs through September — focuses on Davis’s sculptural works, which he creates by coating several layers of paint over found objects like logs, rocks and dolls....

Denver Art Museum’s star curator, Timothy Standring, throws a show of his own work – The Denver Post

Image
Denver Art Museum Curator Timothy Standring poses next to Edgar Degas’ “Four Ballet Dancers on Stage,” 1885-90 at DEGAS: A Passion for Perfection exhibit at the Denver Art Museum in February 2018. (Andy Cross, The Denver Post) Timothy Standring is, arguably, the most influential voice on art in the West. As curator of painting and sculpture at the Denver Art Museum, he’s been the driving force behind a decade of blockbuster exhibits. He organized DAM’s record-breaking van Gogh exhibit in 2011, shepherded its Degas extravaganza in 2017 and ushered, just last year, a Rembrandt retrospective that shed groundbreaking light on the artist’s skills as a printmaker. He’s made bold, museum-worthy arguments for the overlooked talents of painters as diverse as American Andrew Wyeth, Italian Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, and Denver’s own Daniel Sprick, and he’ll attempt to do the same next year when he guides in a show of works by 20th-century populist Norman Rockwell. If you go “Quint...
